The new Flickr iPhone application

by on Sep.23, 2009, under Apple

There’s a new native iPhone app for Flickr, created by Yahoo’s mobile team. It’s currently available in English and French in the US, Canada, UK, France, Hong Kong and Singapore Apple iTunes stores. Download it for free now!

You can take a photo and upload it from the app, view your photostream and activity, and see recent photos from your contacts. There’s also the nifty slideshow that features the “Ken Burns effect”.

There are a lot of ways to use Flickr on your mobile device. There are a whole lot of third party iPhone apps that work great with Flickr, including Mobile Fotos, FlickIt and Darkslide.

And of course, you can always use m.flickr.com, our mobile browser experience that’s available across hundreds of devices in 21 countries.

Finally, there are several hardware manufacturers including BlackBerry and Nokia who have built in “send to Flickr” right from their phones, which we love!

Boosting Computer Performance Doesn’t Always Mean New Hardware

by on Sep.23, 2009, under Wellnews

It wasn’t that long ago that the number one method of improving computer performance was to buy more ram or upgrade your processor. Today we’ve got more memory then we can use and processors are running so fast they almost need liquid cooling. So what does performance enhancement mean today?

There’s one area of the computer that hasn’t really improved as per se. The operating system and software we use on a day to day basis is getting bigger and leaving behind more junk files and info then ever before. If these wasted file begin to build up to large then the result is a sluggish machine that often freezes, crashes or worse is just too painful to turn on.

Most technicians tool of choice today is a registry repair utility. These programs can scan for old files, data entries and errors; then remove them. It’s an automatic clean up utility that has the potential to make big improvements in your systems performance.

Registry cleaners are easy to use, but there are so many titles to choose from it’s often difficult to decide which program to buy. It’s often smart to review some registry cleaner reviews before you make a purchase.

A good Registry Cleaner such as Regcure or Registry Easy offers automatic and manual settings. Where by you can allow the software to run the scans and repair any errors, or you can manually take control of the programs to do it for you. The outcome can often be the same for a beginner or intermediate user. For experts they can often squeeze out a bit more performance using the manual mode.

Are registry cleaners a one fix all solution? Nope, there’s no silver bullet and often times when you’re computer is behaving badly there is just plain something wrong with it. I’d suggest trying a registry repair program before bringing your PC into a repair shop, but don’t mess around with it to much beyond that since permanent data loss and crashes can make this far worse.

Flip UltraHD Camcorder

by on Sep.18, 2009, under CAMERA, Flip Video

Flip UltraHD Camcorder After reading about the Flip UltraHD‘s addition of an HDMI output, larger screen, and longer battery life I decided to purchase the Flip UltraHD Camcorder. Since the MinoHD is very sleek and diminutive in size, my first reaction to the Flip UltraHD Camcoder was that it was quite a bit larger and bulkier to hold, and has taken some time to get used to. However, unless you’ve used a MinoHD the larger size of the UlraHD will probably be less noticeable. I found the camera controls on the UltraHD to be slightly easier to operate vs. the touch sensitive buttons on the MinoHD. As far as video quality between the two, I compared two different videos and both are about the same, however, the colors appear to be slightly more vibrant with the UltraHD.

If you are trying to decide which one to purchase, if maximum portability is important to you than the MinoHD is the better choice. Otherwise, if you’re looking compact camcorder with more features (HDMI output, replaceable batteries, longer record time) then you can’t go wrong with the Flip UltraHD Camcoder .

My ultimate wish is for Pure Digital/Cisco to introduce a MinoHD with all of same functionality as the UltraHD. Until then, the UltraHD is the all-around better choice.

The Limousine, An Unrideable Stretch-Bike

by on Sep.02, 2009, under BIKE

limousine stretch bike

This is “Limousine”, a stretch-bicyle from Wouter Mijland. It is completely impractical, the handlebars put out of the riders reach by the iron-pipe extensions, and even if you were Reed Richards that huge triangle would surely flex and buck like an unmanned fire-hose.

But I love it. Perhaps it is the ridiculous inclusion of the everyday practicalities like lights and a pump on such an outlandish machine, or maybe it is the clean lines and seamless construction. Either way, it actually starts to make tall-bikes look like sensible transport solutions.

You can’t buy it either. The description, “Limousine”, 2008, bycicle [sic], iron pipes”, combined with the Flash site, telegraph that this is art. And who would want it anyway when you could hop onto Mijland’s other cycle project, a bike/shopping cart hybrid (below)?
