This is “Limousine”, a stretch-bicyle from Wouter Mijland. It is completely impractical, the handlebars put out of the riders reach by the iron-pipe extensions, and even if you were Reed Richards that huge triangle would surely flex and buck like an unmanned fire-hose.

But I love it. Perhaps it is the ridiculous inclusion of the everyday practicalities like lights and a pump on such an outlandish machine, or maybe it is the clean lines and seamless construction. Either way, it actually starts to make tall-bikes look like sensible transport solutions.

You can’t buy it either. The description, “Limousine”, 2008, bycicle [sic], iron pipes”, combined with the Flash site, telegraph that this is art. And who would want it anyway when you could hop onto Mijland’s other cycle project, a bike/shopping cart hybrid (below)?

Play Your Music Everywhere You Go! A great motivator to a great workout!

There’s no question that music can pump us up. And the more pumped up we are while working out, the better results we are going to get from working out. The durable case houses not only a great sound system but a compartment where you can store your favorite player. You’ll needed it when you start taking on those trails you’ve never imagined possible on your brand new mountain bike. Create a play list of your most inspiring music and elevate your workout to the next level.

Kevin Cyr’s Camper Bike is “a functioning sculptural piece”, designed to be shown off and to star in Kevin’s own paintings and drawings rather than to actually be slept in, but we love it nonetheless.

The bike, actually modified into a tricycle, carries its home on its back, just like a snail and probably not much faster. But it does solve a problem of bike touring: Where do you sleep? In the old, pre Camper Bike world, you could either carry a tent, sleep under the stars or just bring along a credit card and stay in hotels. Now you can sleep in a real bed, and maybe even use a real toilet.

We say maybe as we’re not sure what’s inside. We suspect that this is, just like the snail’s home, nothing more than a shell. After all, a bed up top in the long section would render the rickety rickshaw dangerously top-heavy, especially on uneven ground. This doesn’t stop us from wanting one, though, if only to freak out other road users. And remember: Always engage the parking brake before sleeping.

Eco Factor: Bike GPS made from recycled computer parts runs on solar energy.

Long and endless bike rides during summer could easily turn into trouble if you don’t have a GPS unit and are not really aware of the roads you’re traversing. Facing similar problems turned an avid DIYer named Brian Nadel into an ingenious inventor who crafted a personal GPS device using nothing more than trashed computer components and some waste software.

The GPS unit is mounted on the handlebar of a bike and uses solar energy for power. The DIYer claims that he didn’t have to pay anything for the device, as all the parts came from his trash bin, but if you’re interested in crafting a device for yourself but don’t have a trash bin the size Brian has, all you will have to pay for the component purchases from eBay and closeout retailers is around $150.

This one concept bike, which is an idea for mass transit renovation in central London called London Garden, is probably one of them.

This bike is not like any bike that I have ever seen before, as it also doubles as a generator. See the solar panels on the wheels? Using the sun’s rays and the pedaling of the cyclist, energy is created and stored within the bike itself.

This energy can later be used to turn the bike into an electric scooter or charge another vehicle like a bus. That’s right, part of this design is so cyclists can board specially made buses with their “bike batteries” and plug them into the bus to provide power.

These cyclists will be rewarded by not having to pay a fare, because hey, they’re paying for the fuel, right? Not only that, but there is even plans to store the bikes in the air, so that wind power adds more power.

I don’t know about you, but this concept could not work now. I mean, you would have to completely redo the bus system to get this to work, and major renovations like that take years. However, the designers of London Garden are taking a step in the right direction for greener power as every watt of energy is being harnessed.

If you’re a busy mom or dad struggling to find opportunities for fitness, this gadget might transform your world. It might also break your bank — the thing is way expensive — but it’s not a bad idea to invest in your fitness, and I’m thinking that the Taga could really deliver.

Taga is a stroller that turns into a bike in 20 seconds (really, click on “The Movie” on the Taga website and you’ll see), which means your possibilities are endless. You can start out on a stroller walk with your kid (or two kids, because there’s an option for that), and then maybe you want to pump up your workout a bit — no problem, just switch that buggy to a bike and take your kids for a spin. Need to stop for a few groceries while you’re on the road? Back to the stroller, and you’re wheeling the aisles of the supermarket, without leaving your bike outside. You can even attach a shopping basket to this contraption, and a rain hood if you end up caught in wet weather.

Taga is fit for kids from birth to age 6, and you don’t need to worry about safety. Kids are carried in forward-facing seats, they’re secured with a five-point harness, there’s a head cushion for added protection and a chain guard to protect clothing and body parts from getting trapped. Hey, it’s safe for the environment too, because it’s free of carbon emissions. A couple of downsides: Taga is only available in Europe right now, and it costs £1,695 (that’s about $2,500).

Tell us what you think. Would you buy it?

Fed up with seeing friends getting clipped by cars, the designers at Altitude combined two things we love — bikes and lasers — to create an instant bike lane and make nighttime cycling a whole lot safer.

Their bike-mounted gadget, called LightLane, beams two bright red lines and the universal symbol for cyclist on the pavement, neatly delineating a bike lane to remind motorists to yield a little space. It should make everyone feel a little more comfort on the road.

“Clearly one of the biggest benefits of bicycle lanes is that there is an established common boundary that both drivers and riders respect and must stay within,” designer Evan Gant told Wired.com. “However, this requires a great deal of resources and planning to implement, so we decided to focus on the fact that the bicycle lane establishes a safety buffer outside of the bicycle’s footprint.”

It should cost around $50, and we think it’s the best idea for a laser since Andy Samberg put one on a cat.

The LightLane started life as an entry to a design competition aimed at promoting bicycle commuting. “Having witnessed several friends be hit by cars while in traffic, we felt the intimidation of sharing the road was one of the bigger barriers to commuting by bicycle,” Gant said. He designed the gadget with Alex Tee.

They experimented with different ways of increasing the perceived size of bicycles, but decided they wouldn’t work. “We quickly realized all of these would compromise the rider’s safety by increasing the probability of accidental clipping,” said Gant.

Such an approach also didn’t consider the appeal of small size and maneuverability. After all, if bikes were big and bulky they’d be called pedicabs. Once they decided tinkering with the physical boundaries were out of the question, Gant and Tee considered virtual boundaries created by lasers. They decided it was a much better approach.

“Although it doesn’t establish a clear and predictable path for a rider to follow, it does encourage a driver to provide the rider with a wider berth by capturing their attention in a different way,” Gant said.

LightLane is only effective at night, of course, something Gant said underscores the need for proper bike lanes. “Permanent lanes are much more proactive and LightLane is more of a reactive solution to the problem,” he said.

Gant and Tee are trying to determine the best color and orientation for the lasers. Once they tackle that question, they’ll turn their attention to financing and building a prototype that is resistant to rust, easy to clean and difficult to steal.

If we’re lucky, they’ll figure out how to make it scorch the paint off any car parked in a bike lane.
